Funded by the National Family Caregiver Support Program which was established by the Older Americans Act Amendments of 2000, this program calls for all states, working in partnership with Area Agencies on Aging and local community service providers to have five basic services for family caregivers.

  • Information to caregivers about available services
  • Assistance to caregivers in gaining access to support services.
  • Individual counseling, organization of support groups and training to caregivers to assist them in making decisions and solving problems related to their care giving roles.
  • Respite care to enable caregivers to be temporarily relieved from their care giving roles.
  • Supplemental services, on a limited basis, to complement the care provided by caregivers.

The caregiver or the care recipient must be 60 years old or older. When the service benefits a caregiver who is over 60, the recipient must be over the age of 18 and in need of supervision due to some mental or physical frailty. Care receivers are in need of socialization and supervision provided through verbal prompting, encouragement and physical cueing. Participants may be frail but must be physically stable and not in need of hands-on personal care.
