The Generations Ashe Senior Center is a place of joy, comradery and support for senior citizens of all walks of life. Many of the programs offered are not only customized for Senior Citizens, but created and lead by Senior Citizens. Generations Ashe empowers all members to advocate and lead in the mission to connect people, embrace challenges and enrich lives.
An inspiring example of this is Janet Manchette. At the age of 85, she is devoted to advocating for Senior Citizen health and fitness and teaches “Exercise with Janet” three days a week. This is a low intensity chair strength and aerobics class that is not only effective but a load of fun!
18 years ago, she was taking a similar class at the Generations Ashe Senior Center, and an instructor was no longer available. No one in the class knew how to work the VHS player, so Janet took the initiative to learn and set up the instructional video at the beginning of each class. The rest is history! She still uses instructional videos to teach the classes and has even purchased her own library of videos based on what she feels her class would benefit from.
In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, classes sadly shut down for a duration of time. That didn’t stop Janet from sharing her love of exercise. She agreed to live stream each class on Facebook with the help of her daughter to reach an even bigger audience and give Senior Center members the opportunity to continue taking their favorite exercise class.
Janet invites any Senior Citizen who is interested to come and try out her class each Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 10am. Or, check it out on Facebook and take the class in the comfort of your own home.
“I teach this class to improve lives. We may not live longer, but we will have a better quality of life.”
-Janet
Thank you, Janet! You are MAKING AN IMPACT!
