Ashe County, NC – The impact of Hurricane Helene continues to ripple through our community, affecting not only homes, businesses, and landscapes but also the emotional well-being of those who experienced the storm firsthand. In response, AARP-NC is offering a series of free community conversations in Ashe County to provide a space for reflection, connection, and healing.
“Trauma is sneaky and hard to corral”, noted AARP-NC ’s Mountain Region Volunteer Leader Alan Briggs “Whether or not you experienced direct loss from Hurricane Helene, witnessing the devastation affected us all. Join us for one of these welcoming and supportive events for those recovering from the Hurricane.”
Led by licensed clinical social worker Laura Lawson, LCSW, and hosted in partnership with AARP, these sessions will offer support for anyone grappling with the lingering effects of Hurricane Helene—whether through personal loss, witnessing the devastation, or experiencing ongoing anxiety about future weather events. Participants can share their experiences or simply listen as Lawson guides discussions on common emotional responses like stress, anxiety, and grief while offering practical coping techniques such as mindfulness, breath work, and reframing negative thoughts.
These conversations aim to foster resilience, reduce isolation, and strengthen community connections. While not therapy, these free sessions offer comfort and support, with additional resources available for those seeking further professional assistance. All are welcome, and participation is entirely voluntary—attendees may share as much or as little as they feel comfortable.
“By coming together as a community, we can process the ongoing impact of Hurricane Helene, support one another, and strengthen our collective resilience” Briggs noted.
